The Szanton Company, an affiliate of the Monks Companies, specializes in developing mixed-income rental housing in or near downtowns. The principals formed the company as an outgrowth of a successful consulting firm that provided development project management services for others.
Since beginning to develop for itself in 2003, The Szanton Company has completed five apartment projects and is working on its sixth. Three of the completed buildings, totaling 110 apartments, are in Portland, Maine. The fourth, a 30-unit building with street-level retail space, is in downtown Exeter, New Hampshire. The fifth, in Biddeford, Maine, is a conversion of a 165 year-old textile mill building into 66 apartments, with dramatic views of the falls of the Saco River.
The Szanton Company's latest project is another adaptive re-use of a historic red-brick mill building - this time in downtown Lewiston, Maine - into 48 apartments. Completion is projected for October of 2012.
