The Szanton Company, an affiliate of the Monks Companies, specializes in developing mixed-income rental housing in or near downtowns. The principals formed the company as an outgrowth of a successful consulting firm that provided development project management services for others.
Since beginning to develop for itself in 2003, The Szanton Company has completed six apartment projects and is working on its seventh. Three of the completed buildings, totaling 110 apartments, are in Portland, Maine. The fourth, a 30-unit building with street-level retail space, is in downtown Exeter, New Hampshire. The fifth, in Biddeford, Maine, is a conversion of a 165 year-old textile mill building into 66 apartments. The sixth, in Lewiston, Maine, converted 65,000 square feet of space in a historic textile mill into 48 apartments.
In 2012, the principals in The Szanton Company founded Saco Falls Management, to manage the properties which the company has developed.
