The Szanton Company, an affiliate of the Monks Companies, specializes in developing mixed-income rental housing in or near downtowns. The principals formed the company as an outgrowth of a successful consulting firm that provided development project management services for others.
Since beginning to develop for itself in 2003, The Szanton Company has completed seven apartment projects. Three of the completed buildings, totaling 110 apartments, are in Portland, Maine. The fourth, a 30-unit building with street-level retail space, is in downtown Exeter, New Hampshire. The fifth, in Biddeford, Maine, is a conversion of a 165 year-old textile mill building into 66 apartments, with dramatic views of the falls of the Saco River. The sixth, is another adaptive re-use of one of Lewiston's historic Bates Mill buildings into 48 apartments. The seventh is also a mill conversion in Biddeford, adjacent to our fifth property and featuring 80 apartments.
We are currently under construction in Bath developing the John Huse Memorial School into 59 apartments. The original 1942 section is being renovated, the 1949 wing is being gutted and re-built and a new wing is being added on. Completion is expected in July.
